Summer Basketball Rules at GVBL

1. P.I.A.A. rules will apply except for the differences listed below.

2. 3rd/4th Grade Division will play on 8 1/2 ft baskets.

3. 5th/6th Grade Division will play on 10ft baskets.

4. Team Play: If dressed to play, every player must play in every game. GVBL teams employ a 60/40 rule with their players (generally considered an equal play rule). Please rotate your players equally.

5. Restrictions: All defenses and offenses are allowed, except as follows:

5th/6th grade division:
There will not be any full court presses until the final 2 minutes of the game. Prior to the last two minutes the backcourt will be considered the "free-zone" (no defensive pressure).

3rd/4th grade division:
This division will have a "free-zone" outside the 3-point arc and a half court press will be allowed during the final two minutes of the game.

6. Game Timing: Two 20 minute halves with a running clock. In both halves the clock will begin stopping on all dead balls with two minutes to go. This format is designed to keep the games as realistic as possible while still maintaining the 1 hour game schedule. If there is more than a 20 point spread in a game both coaches must agree to waive the stop clock during the last two minutes. Playing time is the key to our program, not the score, so I hope you will give your players the court time in spite of the score.

7. Overtime: There will be a 2 minute overtime in all games ending in a tie, with one time out per team with no carry overs. A jump ball will start each overtime period. Similar subsequent overtime periods will be played until there is a winner.

8. Fouls: Each player is allowed 5, (with the 5th foul the player will be disqualified) shooting 1 and 1 on the 7th team foul, two shots on the 10th team foul and above. Teams will be required to hustle to the free throw line at all times. Team delays, including substitutions, will result in a warning, then a technical may be awarded.

9. Technical Fouls: Technical fouls of any sort will not be shot; 2 points will be awarded to the other team plus the ball at half court. A second technical and the player/coach/fan is out of the gym. Fighting, abusive language, trash talk, taunting, and other abusive activities by players, coaches or fans will not be tolerated. They will be removed from the game and the gym and receive a one game suspension (next scheduled game). A coach can receive a technical for poor fan behavior. Our GVBL mission is for youth development, both physical and social, and we need to look to our coaches and parents to be proper role models.

10. Time Outs: Two 1-minute time outs per half with no carry overs.

11. Timekeepers and Scorekeepers: Each team will be required to provide one per game: Home team keeps the stats and the Visiting team operates the clock/ scoreboard.

12. Game Equipment: Coaches will need to bring their own practice balls, scorebook, first aid kit, and towels to all games. Clean the bench area after each game. HOME team provides the game ball of the proper size.

13. Uniforms: A team uniform will be handed out at the beginning of the season and each team member will be required to wear it during games.

14. Protests: Any protest of games should be made via e-mail to the GVBL Directors within 24 hours following the protested game. No protests on referee judgement calls, only on rules/players.
